Have you ever wondered what sounds (or more accurately the vibrations causing them) look like in the real world?
It turns out they’re quite pretty and make some interesting patterns. The discoverer of the technique to easily visualise these vibrations was Ernst Chladni, over 200 years ago in 1787.
Essentially he ran a violin bow down the side of a metal plate with sand on top, and the vibrations did the rest, to make the amazing patterns you can see above.
Someone brought the experiment into the 21st Century and replaced the violin bow with a speaker system, with some equally impressive results.
It just goes to show that when it comes to visualising information, you’re not limited to just numbers and charts; if you can open your mind there literally isn’t a thing you couldn’t visualise and convey in an interesting manner to an audience.
