Data is literally all around us

It takes a lot of data to run a city, and its inhabitants generate a whole load of data on a daily basis too. A unique promotional site for the upcoming video game Watch Dogs displays this in a magnificent way with this interactive map.

Focussing on Paris, Berlin and London, the maps show off the locations of a whole host of data generate within the cities, whether by the infrastructure itself or its inhabitants. This ranges from CCTV locations, wifi hotspots, tweets, mobile signals, ATMs, Foursquare logins etc. You can zoom in, move about and use the search box to see the locations of individual streets or buildings too.

It does a fantastic job of visualising the unseen, and making us realise the things we take for granted are all around us constantly generating data about their environments. You can see interesting correlations too; famous landmarks (such as the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben) have a high density of tweets and Flickr uploads, as well as CCTV cameras – as tourists share these landmarks online and to ensure their continued protection respectively.

What interesting things can you spot in these maps? Are there a lot of CCTV cameras where you live? Are you earning more than the average wage in that area? Did this map help you find a public toilet in your time of need?
